Built Tough Tuesday

Since 1947, West Salem Machinery has been producing built-to-last equipment, which inspired us to start our new series, “Built Tough Tuesday’s”. This new series highlights our tough and reliable solutions with this week featuring a 25-year-old vertical grinder still going strong in New Zealand.

This vertical grinder is used by a sawmill to process wood waste, an essential part of its operations. The machine breaks down log rounds ranging in diameter from 75mm to 300mm.

These log rounds are offcuts, byproducts of the sawmill’s log processing activities. After being fed directly into the vertical grinder, the processed wood is converted into smaller, manageable pieces. The ground wood waste is then repurposed as fuel for a hurst biomass boiler.

This system demonstrates a closed-loop process where waste material is transformed into a resource, highlighting both sustainability and cost efficiency in wood processing. The grinder’s durability and continued high performance even after 25 years further illustrate the long-lasting value and resilience of West Salem Machinery’s products.

As a leader in grindingscreening, and processing equipment, WSM is tough, reliable, and excels in the most demanding conditions.
